To build a good body, you need to start with raw materials: most drill pipe manufacturers do not make steel by themselves, but often order raw materials (steel pipes and joints) from steel mills. After receiving the order, the drill pipe manufacturer selects the steel ratio according to the design requirements. The commonly used one is "chrome-molybdenum steel". According to certain requirements, nickel, silicon, vanadium and other elements will be added. The steel mill will produce and supply the drill pipe factory according to the ratio.

Drill pipes comply with the API5DP (American Petroleum Institute) standard, which divides steel into E75, X95, G105, S135 according to strength, and some even use V150. The higher the grade of steel, the greater the strength. Adding different elements such as manganese and molybdenum to steel can improve the strength and hardness of steel, and can also improve high-temperature mechanical properties, making it have good oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance.


The selection of drill tool steel grade needs to be "adapted to local conditions". The higher the steel grade, the greater the mechanical strength, including tensile, torsion, and extrusion strength. But at the same time, the increase in carbon content will also bring bad effects: on the one hand, the corrosion resistance of steel cannot be used for some wells with high hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide; on the other hand, the plasticity and toughness of the drill bit will deteriorate. When it encounters the test of large-angle bending at the "dogleg" of horizontal well drilling, it is easy to break because it is too brittle! Therefore, in the elements, the strength, toughness and plasticity of the steel are considered, and "adapt to local conditions" according to the construction requirements.
