The working principle of the mud pump  is mainly based on the reciprocating motion of the piston or plunger.

Mud pump is usually driven by the power engine, so that its crankshaft rotation, crankshaft through the crosshead drive piston or plunger in the pump cylinder to do reciprocating movement, under the alternating action of suction valve and discharge valve, to achieve the purpose of pressure and circulation of washing liquid. The following is the specific working process of the mud pump:

Mud pump plays an important role in positive circulation drilling, it is the surface wash medium (such as water, mud or polymer wash fluid) under a certain pressure through the high-pressure hose, faucet  and drill string center hole directly to the bottom end of the drill bit. This cools the bit, removes the cuttings, and transports them to the surface.

Commonly used mud pumps are single cylinder, double cylinder, three cylinder, five cylinder and other models, they are equipped with a gearbox in the pump mechanism  or a hydraulic motor  to adjust its speed, in order to achieve the purpose of changing the displacement.

The reciprocating movement of the piston or plunger usually completes one or two suction and drainage actions in a cycle.

Mud pumps also play an important role in oil drilling , pumping mud into the well as the drill bit is drilled to cool the bit, clean the drill tool, and bring debris and other waste back to the surface.
