“The customer’s oil field is a ‘three-low’ oil and gas field. Due to long-term water injection and exploitation, there is a common problem of poor cementing quality due to water intrusion and water channeling in the wellbore.” On September 14, after successfully finding out the cause of the cementing quality fluctuations in the customer’s cementing project department, Michael, a third-level engineer of cementing workers at SVES Oilfield Supply Co., Ltd, took a shuttle bus to the customer’s project department more than 100 kilometers away to help solve technical problems and improve cementing quality.


In order to carry out field tests of the new waterproof cement slurry system as soon as possible, as a technical research and development backbone, Michael raced against time and worked hard to transform scientific research results into visible productivity.

After graduating from university in 2009, Michael came to the Maowusu Desert from the Central Plains and became an intern technician in the cementing team of SVES Oilfield Supply Co., Ltd.


Cementing is a key link between drilling and oil production, with high operating costs, complex processes, and high controllability. Mei Mingjia, who had just started working, soon discovered that cementing involved many disciplines and that the professional knowledge he had learned in school was not enough to cope with the actual work.


In order to master the solid technology as soon as possible, Michael stayed in the laboratory during the day, operating the instruments, asking for advice from the master, and completing the chemical synthesis and evaluation experiments carefully; at night, he returned to the dormitory and continued to study professional books and literature. A year later, he was successfully converted to a regular employee with the first place and began to work alone. Five years later, he was transferred to the company's cementing technology research institute to engage in cement slurry system development.


Gas channeling, leakage, water invasion, etc. are all stubborn problems that restrict the quality of cementing operations, and are also recognized problems in the international petroleum engineering industry. Michael is well aware that improving the cementing quality of the "three lows" oil and gas fields in the Ordos Basin is not only a need to ensure investment benefits, but also a major issue related to safety and environmental protection, and continuous technological innovation is necessary.


In order to improve the high-quality cementing rate of the horizontal section, Michael and his colleagues actively carried out scientific research. Checking information, conducting experiments, analyzing data, improving formulas, evaluating experiments... With the joint efforts of the team, after nearly two years of unremitting efforts, four cementing admixtures have been independently developed, and three sets of special cement slurry systems have been formed, achieving a technical breakthrough in the "high strength and low elastic modulus" of cement stone, effectively solving cementing problems such as gas channeling, water invasion, and water channeling in horizontal wells, and raising the average cementing quality rate of the horizontal section to more than 90%. The longest horizontal sealing section has reached 5060 meters, repeatedly breaking the Asian onshore horizontal well cementing construction record, and strongly supporting the construction of the customer's shale oil demonstration area. At present, the cement slurry system developed by Michael has created an output value of more than 80 million yuan.


Adhering to the combination of theory and practice and daring to innovate independently, Michael has won everyone's recognition. He was awarded the honorary title of "cementing craftsman" by the company. This is a great encouragement to Michael. As the main R&D personnel of the cement slurry system, Michael is more diligent. In July this year, SVES Oilfield Supply Co., Ltd completed the drilling of the first well in cooperation with customers. After receiving the front-line technical support task, Michael immediately drove more than 500 kilometers to collect drilling data, implement the technical details of wellbore preparation, discuss and compile cementing construction plans, and put forward key technical measures such as pre-fluid, graded sealing, and small displacement displacement in a targeted manner, which effectively ensured the cementing quality.


"There is no shortcut to scientific and technological innovation. Only by being down-to-earth and persisting can we make breakthroughs." Mei Mingjia said. Over the years, Michael has overcome one difficult problem after another with unremitting efforts and made his own contribution to increasing oil production.
